Weipa's the bomb

As we head into another cool winter and some of the crocs start to slow down, the croc team has to work a bit harder to get the most out of the crocs and ensure the exceptionally high standard is maintained for the outstanding CrocsLIVE shows. Because crocodiles are cold-blooded, the cool air temperature affects their metabolism and energy levels and tends to slow them down during the cooler months.

One exception to this rule is Weipa the wild caught crocodile from western Cape York. Weipa is one of the most dangerous crocs here at Australia Zoo; even our Head Crocodile Keeper Tubes Millyard who is scared of absolutely nothing (and even has a small 'No Fear' tattoo on his ankle) is very cautious of Weipa's explosive strikes from the water's edge. Unlike most of our other crocs, Weipa rarely hand-feeds and is always looking at the keeper when he strikes out for some food. Luckily all of the croc team are extreme athletes and always give Weipa plenty of room and respect. It's just what we do.
