Meet Stan! He's a quintessentially English Ring-tailed Lemur that made the long journey from Colchester Zoo in the UK to live on a tropical island at Australia Zoo. Packing all the essentials for his new life down under but forgetting some important documentation, we called on your help to #NameOurLemur.
Winning entrant Shell Taylor from Brisbane suggested the name Stan, short for Stanway, the area where Colchester Zoo is situated and where our little lemur came from. Having come from Stanway herself and moving to Queensland just one year ago - we thought these two had a lot in common!
Stan is now exploring his Lemur Island with his new friends, Vatobe, Betafo and Mandaby, who have lived at Australia Zoo for a while. He's settling in well and enjoying sunbaking in the trees and eating fruit salad, and is proving to love his permanent holiday in Australia. Shell was one of hundreds of entries on Facebook and Instagram who suggested a name for our new lemur. She'll now be able to visit Stan and his friends when she brings her family to Bindi's Island and enjoys a lemur encounter at Australia Zoo on us as a reward for picking such a creative name.
You too can check out our Ring-tailed Lemurs from one of the three storeys of Bindi's Treehouse, or for a really special experience, book in an encounter! You'll be able to hand-feed these cheeky guys as they sit on your shoulder and smile for the camera.
From Bindi's Island, you'll also be able to check out our Alligator Snapping Turtle, colourful Macaws, Boa Constrictors and giant Aldabran Tortoises. Explore the island these summer holidays and be sure to share your Bindi's Island photos with us by tagging #AustraliaZoo on social media!
