FAQ

I am 12 years old and want to get a job at the Zoo. How can I do this?

Unfortunately, you will have to wait until you are a little older. In the meantime, make sure you learn as much as possible about your passion for wildlife or for a particular species. Always be safe and ensure that you listen to the experts - whether it be on TV, in magazines or in person, if you're lucky enough. Make enquiries to undertake volunteer work or participate as much as possible in conservation and animal welfare projects. Gain as much experience as you can from a variety of sources, and even consider the subjects that you are studying at school. You may not be able to volunteer in any organisation or undertake work experience with your school until you are in Year 10 and of working age.

I am from the UK and wondering if the Zoo will sponsor me, so I can work at Australia Zoo?

This is a very common request and unfortunately due to the huge numbers of people who ask, this is not something we are able to do on such a broad scope. Please be aware that we have enquiries from all over the world, from many people with a huge range of skills, qualifications, experiences and passions, and competition to get employment here is tough.

Hence, it is generally not feasible for us to sponsor people from all over the world. Remember that there are many different government legislations from different countries to consider and that this type of commitment is very complex (eg: cultural differences, language barriers, accommodation, finances, support issues etc).

Do I have to be Australian to work at Australia Zoo?

The simple answer is no. However, it is obvious that Australia Zoo and The Crocodile Hunter has an Australian image and culture to portray. This is very important to us. We also want to promote what is so special and wonderful about Australia and our people.

I have another general enquiry about employment, jobs, and career advice; who can I contact?

Please feel to email us using our contact form and we can ensure that the most appropriate and qualified person can be sourced to answer your enquiry.

Does Australia Zoo employ translators?

Not specifically, but again we have a wonderful team of talented staff and we can generally find someone to assist with the job of translating. We have actively trained some of our staff in Japanese and other languages during our development.

What do I wear for an interview?

You should present yourself professionally and ensure that you are appropriately attired. We definitely want to see that you have pride in your appearance. Board shorts, jeans, singlets and thongs are a definite no. Please keep in mind the nature of our environment when selecting your attire - a three-piece suit would certainly be welcomed, but it may be a case of over-dressing. Whatever you wear, please make sure you arrive early for the interview, you are well prepared and you are ready to showcase your attitude, behaviour and skills to our Human Resources team.

When applying for a job, what information do I submit?

Generally, applicants should forward their resume with at least two contactable and current referees listed. Attached to the resume should be a covering letter which outlines the position/s you are applying for and any highlighted selling points.

Application forms should be filled out completely; do not leave any sections blank. Writing should be clear and legible.

What if none of the jobs listed in the website suit my skills?

You never know; with our rapid growth and development, you could be just what we are looking for! If you don't apply, you will never ever know. Sometimes it's a matter of 'not quite yet,' but if you are really keen then just ensure you re-submit your details regularly over the next few years.
